The charitable arm of Bharti Enterprises, the Bharti Airtel Foundation, unveiled a merit-cum-means scholarship program on Tuesday. This program will fully finance undergraduate and graduate technology-based engineering courses at 50 of the top colleges in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Initiated to commemorate the 25 years of the Bharti Airtel Foundation, the initiative will start with 250 students annually and gradually expand to 4,000 students. It is anticipated that the scholarship program will require an annual budget of ₹100 crore in order to provide students with ongoing support.
The program has a special focus on the girl child, according to Rakesh Bharti Mittal, vice chairman of Bharti Enterprises, which operates the telecom company Airtel, and co-chairman of the Bharti Airtel Foundation. However, the main objective of the scholarship is to remove obstacles for financially disadvantaged students. The program will be available to students who are eligible for admission in August 2024 and is designed to assist worthy students from a variety of socioeconomic situations. Scholarship recipients will be students whose annual family income is less than ₹850,000. Although the deadline is 31st August, it is advised apply at the earliest as the seats are limited.
“For the 2024 cohort, we will be picking up 250 students coming from the tech sector. The applications will be reviewed for meeting the criteria by Buddy4Study,” Mittal said. The corpus for the new programme will come from the corporate social responsibility spends that the group has committed as per compliance norms.
“From my perspective, if I see how many lives we can shape or change. It isn’t just directly the number of students who are getting support, when they become employable, the whole family benefits,” he added.
Undergraduate and integrated courses in the fields of electronics and communication, telecom, information technology, computer sciences, data sciences, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of things (IoT), robots, AR/VR, and machine learning will be the main emphasis of the scholarships.
"Bharti Scholars" will be the title given to the recipients of this program. Throughout the course of their studies, they will receive 100% of their tuition reimbursement in addition to a laptop. In addition, all qualified students who apply will receive reimbursement for their meal and hostel fees. After graduates graduate and find gainful employment, recipients will be urged to voluntarily support at least one student on a continual basis.
